Large Scale Use of Model-based Testing in Testing of a Credit Card Authorization Switching System

Luottokunta is a Finnish credit card service company that is responsible for practically all national and international credit card transactions in Finland as well as some other payment services.

To scale-up transaction capacity and to implement the new credit card payment standards Luottokunta started a large scale project to replace its Credit Card Authorization Message Switching system with a completely new high performance switching system.

The switch has to process 30 transactions per second, which means 9 million transactions per month. Transactions are based on ISO 8583 standard that contains several message types with complex data structures. Due to the nature of the Finnish card payment environment, extensive integration of several message formats and conversions from one format to another during the transaction are required. Rigorous quality standards were imposed on the project. Objectives for testing included:

  • Conformance to messaging standards
  • Functional correctness of the message routing, format conversions and card authentication
  • Performance of the system
  • Extensive regression testing

Meeting the defined testing challenges with conventional testing paradigms did not seem feasible. Therefore the project decided to apply the radically new concept of Model-based Testing introduced by Conformiq Software in the functional, integration and system testing. The results from the new testing paradigm exceeded all expectations and Model-based Testing proved to be one of the key factors for the successful production start of the new switch system.
